Are there more successful male webmasters than there are female ones? See I know this topic has probably been discussed before, but I know who my blog readers are, and for the most part, cute stalker girls aside, they’re a very intelligent bunch of both genders. So here’s me asking you guys what you think on the matter?
I wont make this a long blog post as I’m more interested in what you guys have to say on the matter, but this is how I see it; Both men and women have a shot at making it in their industry of choice. It’s those that want it bad enough that have the upper hand. I think it’s more about different people excelling in what it is they are good at, more passionate about. If i’m to look at the male VS female web presence online today, I’d have to say that it looks like males are dominating the stage. Disagree? Let me know why!
Oh and another thing, I think this country would be in turmoil if a female president was ever elected.

I think it depends on who you know in the web industry and what you’re into Mike. I don’t know all those in the SEO business but I do know a bunch of female designers, some amazing ones, more so than I know Male designers.

Lol mikey, I just think female web owners tend to get someone else to do the dirty webmaster stuff, and just manage their business and oversee it, like I do

Men are kicking ass in the web world, and in the technology sector as a whole. It’s a pretty indisputable fact. Women, it seems, are not nearly as interested in technology as men. [Reference: Women in Technology] With fewer females even pursuing anything in this field, it’s only logical that there would be more successful men online than women.
I think the disparity in this regard has more to do with one’s passions and interests, as Michael suggested, rather than one sex’s inherent superiority over the other. Both men and women are equally capable of being successful and accomplished in whatever area they choose. Granted there are some areas where women have an advantage over men and vice-versa, but this isn’t really one of them.
What I’d be interested in knowing is why men are more drawn to tech than women. It’s probably some complex interplay between our slightly different brain structures and thought patterns, as well as cultural influences, societal norms and pressures, and a host of other things.
Personally I know a lot of women who use computers - I don’t know any who don’t, even my 80-some-year-old grandmother uses a computer on occasion to check her on her stocks, but I do not know many that are the slightest bit interested in using them to create and run their own sites, or come up with a brilliant new tool. They’d rather utilize the tools and sites that already exist. I think I am in the minority of women that do take an interest in this.
Maybe it just all comes back to this: men do, women talk. LOL.
Elaina - he specified “webmasters” in the title, which isn’t quite the same as a designer. One can be a designer without being a webmaster, just as one can be a webmaster without being a designer. I think as a webmaster though, people tend to juggle a few more hats - PR, coding, design, SEO, writing, etc.

I dont think its a matter of gender so much as a matter of passion for the particular job.
my sister is a material science engineer…engineering is still one of the only fields dominated by men, but she’s getting paid very well, with her doctorates degree and gaining the respect of many.
Why is this? Because she knows what she’s doing, is educated, and has a passion for it.
Its like that in everything. Its not a matter of sex, its a matter of drive and/or love for your particular job. Those who love anything tend to do more for it/with it.
Putting things in male/female categories is too black and white. A lot more goes into it, then merely gender.

The web is still relatively young, there’s still room for women to pick up the pace. it’s like with our country, look at where we were a few years ago in terms of women and men in the business world and look at where we are now. With time I’m sure more female webmasters will hit the scene and turn heads.

Mike, great to have you back in the game.
Men in my opinion are more drawn to programing, marketing, SEO and all things webmaster related, but it’s not just about that. It’s about the ability to make it in a cut throat industry. It’s do or die most of the time, the difference between making money and not making anything at all is just 10 search results down the first page of that search right? Women bring emotion into the equation too and tend to let it get the better of them.
Sure there are a few professional women out there but I can count them on my one hand, using only 2 fingers. Men are dominating the internet and I also think it’s because of that, that men will remain the dominant gender in the webmaster world.

I am man, hear me roar. I throw a woman over my shoulder and walk away, she doesn’t complain, how is that sexist?
And yes men are better webmasters than women, says who? The hundreds more successful men than women in today industry.
Yes my last comment was bad, and I can be immature, but think about how much worse life would be with a women ad president…*shudders*
Of course it doesn’t, you’re right, most men would give a left nut to be half as hot as I am, wait you said success, ah, half as successful as i am.
